🎥 How to create and trigger overlay popups

In ConvertFlow you can create different types of popup campaigns.

"Overlays" are popups that take over the visitor's browser window, to display your call-to-action.

Overlay popups are useful for promotions on your website that you need to draw attention to. With ConvertFlow's targeting conditions and trigger controls, you can always show your overlay popup at the perfect time.

Creating an overlay campaign

Click to create a campaign in ConvertFlow, scroll past the template category suggestions and you can choose to see templates for the "Overlay" campaign type.

Just click "See Templates" to get inspiration, or click "Create Blank campaign" to start from scratch.

Choosing an overlay template

Once you've clicked to see overlay templates, you'll be taken to the template gallery, filtered to see only overlay campaigns.

Browse and preview the various overlay templates to find the perfect campaign. You can also filter faster using the category filters on the left.

Once you've found the template you want, click "Use Template" and name your overlay campaign.

Customizing your overlay campaign

Once you've created your campaign, you'll be taken to the drag-and-drop builder

Here you can quickly customize the campaign template. Edit the headlines, paragraph text, button text, and form settings.

Adjusting the overlay campaign width

Each overlay campaign template will come with a default maximum width.

This can be adjusted by clicking on the "Theme" tab in the builder panel.

Here you'll be able to control the maximum width of your overlay campaign, as well as the theme of the overlay's backdrop.

Controlling when the overlay triggers

In the "Settings" tab of the builder panel, scroll down to find the popup trigger settings.

Here you can choose the trigger type you want to use. Trigger types include:

Exit-Intent – Want your sticky bar to appear when the visitor moves their mouse to exit the page? This trigger type will detect their mouse movement to determine when to trigger the sticky bar. On mobile devices, exit intent sticky bars will trigger when the visitor clicks the back button in their browser.

Scroll Point – This trigger type lets you display your campaign when the visitor has scrolled to a certain percentage of the page. For example, you may want to trigger the sticky bar 50% through a blog post.

Timed Delay – You can have your sticky bar display X number of seconds after the page loads using this trigger type.

Upon Click Only – Need your sticky bar to trigger only when a button is clicked? Using this trigger option, your sticky bar can preload on the page and then trigger when a button is clicked. You can use either a ConvertFlow button linked to your sticky bar campaign or apply the given custom trigger class to any HTML content on your page that you'd like to trigger the sticky bar upon clicking.

On-Site Message – Want to preface a larger sticky bar with a small on-site message from a team member? Using this trigger type, you can have a small popup message appear in the corner of the screen, that when clicked will trigger the sticky bar.

Two-Tap Floating Button – Display a floating button from the corner of your website, that when clicked triggers the full campaign.

Add to cart (Shopify) – Trigger your sticky bar after an item is added to the cart. This trigger type only works on Shopify store websites.

Pro tip: The two-tap floating button can be set to trigger after a popup campaign is closed, so visitors can access your offer after they already closed it out.

With every trigger type except "upon click only", you can adjust the trigger suppression setting. If you set trigger suppression to always show the popup, it will trigger the popup after the visitor has closed out the campaign. If you set it to hide for a number of days after closing, it will be suppressed until the given time has passed.

Previewing your overlay campaign

Once you're done making your edits, save and publish your changes. Then click to preview your overlay campaign.

Here you'll be able to preview and test out your campaign in a safe test environment. Testing your campaign doesn't count towards campaign stats, and it doesn't trigger automations.
Next, click "Launch" to control which pages and visitor segments you want to target your overlay popup to.

Here you can control when and where your popup displays on your website.

Launching as a standalone campaign

To launch your campaign as a standalone, add any targeting conditions needed to control which visitors should see this campaign, and then toggle the checkbox to activate the campaign.

Once you've done this, the campaign will begin displaying on your website.

Confirming your campaign is displaying

With the ConvertFlow script placed on your website, and your campaign launched, head to a page of your website where it should show.

Your popup will trigger depending on the trigger settings you've set in the builder.

If your campaign isn't showing, click the blue ConvertFlow icon at the bottom left of your website to toggle the admin widget.

This helps you see which campaigns are targeting and why, or why not, by seeing which conditions are met.
